The US ambassador to the Netherlands apologizes for statements against Muslims

The new US ambassador to the Netherlands Peter Hoekstra apologized for statements against Muslims made in 2015 when he claimed there were "closed areas" in the Netherlands and that politicians were being burned because of Muslim immigrants.
In an interview with the Dutch newspaper Telegraph, Hoekstra, a former Republican member of the Michigan Congress, apologized for the statement, saying he was wrong and personally shocked.
The interview came two days after the US ambassador angered the Dutch press by refusing to answer questions about the remarks during a meeting with reporters.
"The Islamist movement has now reached a point where Europe is in a state of chaos," Hoekstra said at a ceremony in November 2015 sponsored by the right-wing David Horowitz Freedom Center. "There are politicians who are burning."
State Department Undersecretary Steve Goldstein said in a press statement that the ministry "disagrees" with Hoekstra's remarks about Muslim immigrants in the Netherlands.
In December, the ambassador denied that he made the remarks in 2015, saying the program "Newsur" broadcast by Dutch television that "an incorrect statement, this is false news," but returned and denied describing it as false news.
