[ltr]Abo Bakr Al-Baghdadi, ISIS' leader and the most wanted man on the planet, has repeatedly eluded capture during the past two years before of the collapse of his self-declared caliphate in 2017, the Daily Star newspaper reported.

Various reports of his death, injury or arrest have emerged, but none have been confirmed by credible sources.

In 2015, al-Baghdadi was seriously wounded in an airstrike near Shirqat before recovering in Baaj, three intelligence agencies have confirmed.

Now the elusive leader is thought to be holed up in the Euphrates river valley, somewhere near Iraq’s border with Syria, according to the US military.[/ltr]

[ltr]Witnesses who saw al-Baghdadi in the wake of the Muslim festival of Ramadan said he “looked tired and drawn."

“He’s on his last legs,” according to an Iraq-based official. “We will get him this year. Finally.”

Unless Iraqi military can capture and kill al-Baghdadi, who declared himself caliph of ISIS in 2014, his death cult may continue to unleash terror across the western world, experts have warned.

The ISIS cell that plans and directs terror attacks abroad is still intact despite the dismantling of the caliphate in Syria and Iraq, officials say.[/ltr]

[ltr]ISIS expert Hisham al-Hashimi believes the two men behind the branch, Abdullah Youssef al-Khatouri, and Abu Tiba Ghanem al-Jbooriare, are still at large somewhere in Europe.

“They are a complex administration filled with ex-intelligence officials,” Hashimi said.

“They deal with recruiting, arming and transporting terrorists and collect the financial contributions and alms.

“Out of 35 branches, 33 are run by two Iraqi men: Abdullah Youssef al-Khatouri, nicknamed Abu Bakr, and Abu Tiba Ghanem al-Jboori. We believe one is in Turkey and the other is in Scandinavia.”[/ltr]

Shiraz Maher, radicalization and political violence expert at King’s College London, said military defeat in the Middle East has emboldened the resolve of ISIS leaders to unleash terror in the west.

“In the next 24 months there will be concerted attempts to attack the west,” Maher said.

“The narrative of vengeance is important.

He added: “ISIS says it will return, and in the meantime, it’s asking people to carry out attacks in its name.”

The whereabouts of al-Baghdadi have been the subject of intense speculation since his first and only public appearance in 2014 at the Grand Mosque of al-Nuri in Mosul.

There were reports that the 46-year-old was killed in an airstrike in the Iraqi governorate of Nineveh in July.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed it “had information” from “top ISIS commanders” that al-Baghdadi was dead.

But in a dismissal of his death, Lahur Talabani, a senior Kurdish counter-terrorism official, claimed al-Baghdadi was still alive last year.

He said: “Baghdadi is definitely alive. He is not dead.

“We have information that he is alive. We believe 99 percent he is alive.

“Don't forget his roots go back to al-Qaeda days in Iraq. He was hiding from security services. He knows what he is doing.”

I doubt he is dead, he is too well taken care of - since when does ISIS and the "grand mufti" Baghdadi get his teeth whitened ??? He is well cared for and will be the "bogeyman" for a long, someone needs him to be there so there is "someone to hate" and keep the fires burning.
