BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese ships on Thursday began cleaning up a large oil spill left by the sunken Iranian tank after it was set ablaze in the Chinese Sea.
The National Oceanic Administration said in a statement it was "monitoring 4 patches totaling 101 square kilometers," adding that it "is trying to stop the progress of the oil spill and assess its consequences on the ecological balance at sea."
The ship, which was carrying 136,000 tons of light and heavy fuel, sank after a week of fire after it collided with a Chinese cargo ship about 300 kilometers east of Shanghai.
Beijing announced the sinking of an Iranian oil tanker in the East China Sea, which led to the formation of four oil patches parallel to the size of Paris. Ending / 25 g
