    [ltr]Turkish Defense Minister Noureddine Ganikli announced on Friday the start of a military operation in Afrin north of Syria, stressing that "the order required the implementation of the process without delay."[/ltr]
    [ltr]The minister said in a television interview that the Afrin operation had "actually begun" with cross-border shelling, but no troops had moved into the area.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"Turkey has no choice but to eliminate all terrorist elements in northern Syria," Ganikli said, adding Ankara would continue talks with Moscow on the Afrin operation.[/ltr]
    [ltr]He said Turkey was developing weapons systems to counter anti-tank missiles used by Syrian Kurdish people's protection units.[/ltr]
    [ltr]In the same context, the Kurdish People's Protection Units said that the Turkish forces fired about 70 shells on Kurdish villages in Afrin, in a bombardment of Turkish territory began at about midnight on Thursday and lasted until Friday morning.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"It was the most violent Turkish bombing since Ankara escalated its threats to take military action against the Kurdish region," a spokesman for the units in Afrin Rojat Rouge told Reuters.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Speaking from Afrin, Rogge said the people's protection units would respond "with the strongest force" to any attack on Afrin.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Ankara regards Kurdish forces deployed in northern Syria as an extension of PKK rebels fighting Turkey, vowing to attack them and mobilizing troops and tanks on the border.[/ltr]
