[ltr]International organization: 70 million people suffer from humanitarian crises ignored by the world Erwer[/ltr]
    [ltr]Follow up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]An international charity organization says about 70 million people are suffering in humanitarian crises, far from the concerns of aid workers, donors and the media.[/ltr]
[ltr]CARE International said in a report entitled "Suffering in silence ... the 10 humanitarian crises that did not receive enough attention in 2017" that North Korea followed by Eritrea and Burundi at the top of the list.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Some of the emergencies are almost invisible," said Laurie Leigh, the interim Secretary-General of Kier, who helps people affected by disasters and emergencies.[/ltr]
[ltr]"As our report shows, 70 million people in the 10 cases that are not addressed in a few ways are suffering in silence," he said during a press briefing.[/ltr]
[ltr]He added that these emergency situations accounted for one third of the 220 million people in need of humanitarian assistance but received only two percent of the funding.[/ltr]
[ltr]He said North Koreans, who do not have enough food and depend on government food aid, make up 70 percent of those suffering, adding that "this represents 18 million people."[/ltr]
[ltr]The report says that while the international community has focused on North Korea's nuclear program and on political tensions, the humanitarian situation there is little known.[/ltr]
[ltr]Two out of every five North Koreans are malnourished, according to UN statistics.[/ltr]
[ltr]Kiir said the Korean leadership has caused a worsening humanitarian situation in the country, which faces isolation as well as global warming and natural hazards that occasionally occur, such as floods, high temperatures or prolonged drought.[/ltr]
[ltr]Last July, North Korea experienced the worst drought since 2001, according to Kiir, where a fall in sub-level rainfall in key crop areas has severely disrupted agriculture and destroyed the main seasonal crops in 2017.[/ltr]
[ltr]North Korean women and children are the most vulnerable, Kiir said. The report said more than 200,000 children are expected to suffer from severe malnutrition of a potentially fatal type.[/ltr]
[ltr]Kir is not allowed to enter and work in North Korea, but among the few organizations with assistance programs are the United Nations Food Program (WFP) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).[/ltr]
[ltr]Of all the 10 crises listed in the report, with the exception of only three, they are concentrated in countries in Africa.[/ltr]
[ltr]These countries are: North Korea, Eritrea, Burundi, Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Vietnam, Lake Chad Basin, Central African Republic and Peru.[/ltr]
