Iraq will lose up to 40 percent of its agricultural land after the Turkish Alesso dam is operational in the coming months, an international organization said.

"The massive Alissu dam built on the Tigris River will cause great economic and environmental damage to the Iraqi cities on the Tigris River when it is operational in March," said Jassem al-Asadi, the regional director of the UN-led organization Nature Iraq in the South.
Al-Asadi said in a press statement: "Iraq will face when the dam fill a large water deficit in the Tigris River, where the rate of water revenues to Iraq from the river will drop by 11 billion cubic meters."

He added: "The water levels of the Tigris River entering Iraq will fall from (20.93) billion cubic meters per year to (9.7) billion cubic meters, which constitutes about 50 percent of the annual requirement of water of the river."
Al-Asadi pointed out that "Turkey's reduction of Iraq's share of water will cause it to lose (40%) of its arable land, which is estimated at 696 thousand hectares, and will affect the dam in the Iraqi marshes significantly and will reduce the area."
