The United Nations has completed a report that North Korea is circumventing international sanctions by exporting coal, steel and other goods banned under UN sanctions, and that it returned to Pyongyang about 200 million dollars last year.

North Korea "continues to export almost all the goods banned in the resolution, with revenues of about 200 million dollars between January and September 2017," the report said.

The report, prepared by a group of United Nations experts charged with verifying the application of sanctions, has been handed over to the 15 States members of the Security Council.

The experts stressed that "a concerted effort among Member States is (crucial) to address these rampant illegal activities."

The report also noted military cooperation projects with North Korea monitored in Africa as well as in the Asia-Pacific region.

The UN team also found evidence of North Korea's military cooperation to develop Syrian chemical weapons programs and provide ballistic missiles to Myanmar.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterich said Friday that it was "absolutely necessary" for the main players in the North Korean crisis to hold "serious" talks to build on the breakthrough in relations between Pyongyang and Seoul.

Guterich will pay an official visit to South Korea for talks with officials in Seoul and also to attend the opening of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

"Our goal remains the peaceful disarmament of nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula," Guterich told reporters at the UN headquarters.

In January, the United States imposed new sanctions on North Korean and Chinese firms and on individuals Washington said supported North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's regime and its nuclear weapons development program.

The new US sanctions came as the United States sought to block the flow of North Korean goods and materials, such as oil, electronic equipment and metal, and press Kim to curb his nuclear weapons development program, which poses a threat to the region and US territory.
