[ltr]WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A massive increase in sexual assault reports at the US military academy at West Point last year highlighted a long-standing military and academic case, a Pentagon study released on Wednesday showed.[/ltr]
[ltr]The annual report said 50 cases of sexual assault were reported at the US Military Elite Academy during the 2016-2017 academic year, almost double the number compared to the previous school year.[/ltr]
[ltr]In general, sexual assaults and harassment in the US military are not reported, but they came under scrutiny last year after a scandal involving some US marines filming naked women on the Internet.[/ltr]
[ltr]Officials believe that one reason for the increase in communications at the Academy is a change in the reporting policy and the relocation of the Office of Assistance to Victims of Offenses elsewhere.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Students may feel comfortable reporting sexual assault allegations after moving offices to a place that is easy for the victim to access and does not attract attention," the report said.[/ltr]
