An American citizen brought to the United States as an Iraqi refugee filed a lawsuit against a US airline that removed him from the plane for speaking Arabic.

Khairuddin Makhzoumi said that on April 6, 2016, he was traveling to California on board the Southwest Airlines. After sitting in the plane, he telephoned his uncle to talk about a dinner with former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. A police officer removed from the plane

"The airline, based in Dallas, took this action against him in Arabic, although he did not make a mistake or pose a security threat," he said. "One of the plane's staff told me why you speak Arabic, you do not know the atmosphere is very dangerous."

Makhzoumi confirmed that the local law enforcement agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released him after hours of interrogation and humiliating searches, but Southwest refused to reserve a new ticket, instead referring him to the old ticket.

He said he was seeking compensation from Southwest Airlines after violating his civil rights, discrimination and emotional turmoil.

"Southwest is well versed in the prevailing patterns and sentiments associated with fear of Islam. You know or should have known that it can not simply expel Arabic-speaking passengers without good reason or concern."

The company did not comment on the lawsuit filed by Makhzoumi before the US District Court in San Francisco.
