(Reuters) - US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson held lengthy talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday evening in Ankara in an effort to ease tense relations over Turkey's military operation in northern Syria.
According to Turkish officials, Erdogan said during his meeting with Tillerson "clearly" what Turkey "wants", especially on Syria and Iraq, and also on the long list of controversial issues that poison relations between Washington and Turkey allies of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
"During the meeting, regional events were discussed, starting with Syria and Iraq, the issue of counterterrorism and bilateral relations," the officials said. "It is clear that (for Tillerson) what Ankara wants on these issues."
A State Department spokesman said there had been a "productive and open conversation" between Erdogan and Tillerson "to make progress in the interest of both countries." He expressed his hope for "further progress" during a meeting between Tillerson and his Turkish counterpart Mouloud Zhaoshoglu on Friday.
Tilerson made no statement. Asked about the three-and-a-half-hour meeting between him and Erdogan, also attended by Chaochoglu, the US secretary of state said: "We still have work."
Before Tillerson's arrival in Turkey, Turkish Defense Minister Noureddine Ganikli told his US counterpart James Matisse that the Kurdish People's Protection Forces, a coalition of Washington-backed Syrian forces, should be excluded from the fight against an oppressive organization.

For his part, Mattis promised Washington to provide more concrete support to fight the PKK in Iraq, calling on Ankara to focus on the fight against "da'ash" in Syria.
