JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Some Syrian rockets fired at Israeli warplanes that raided Syria last Saturday crossed central Israel and landed in the Mediterranean, Israeli sources said Friday.
An Israeli army investigation into the crash of an Israeli F-16 fighter jet in the raid, quoting excerpts from it, said that the Syrian missiles, which targeted an Israeli squadron of 8 planes and raided 12 locations in Syria, crossed over Tel Aviv and landed in the sea. Average.
The Israeli media confirmed this information. The military commentator Alon Ben-David noted in the Maariv newspaper that "the rockets were flying in the middle of the country. That is why Ben-Gurion international airport was closed for a short period of time."
The Israel Hayom newspaper reported on its website that the rockets fell off the shores of Lebanon.
According to sources in the Israeli security services, the number of rockets fired from Syria towards Israeli aircraft over the past six weeks, more than the number of those launched during the last 35 years as a whole.
Security sources attributed the rise to the Russian military presence on Syrian soil, saying that Moscow wants to re-empower the Syrian government and encourage it to strengthen its sovereignty, especially on the country's airspace by expanding the use of defense systems against Israeli aircraft, according to sources.
