(Reuters) - US President Donald Trump said the arming of teachers could prevent school-fired shootings like in Florida last week when 17 people were killed.
In a White House meeting with about 40 students, teachers and relatives of the victims of the Florida accident, Trump explained that a worker with a weapon could end a "very fast" attack.
Survivors of the February 14 massacre demanded Trump to take action to ensure that it was not repeated again.
Trump has also supported calls for tougher verification procedures against those who buy arms.
Meanwhile, other survivors urged lawmakers in Florida to take action to control the arms sale.
"We will take very strong measures to verify the backgrounds of arms buyers and to focus heavily on their mental health," Trump told Marjorie Stoneman Douglas students on Wednesday.
"It will not be just talk, just like in the past."
Trump pledged to "vigorously" study calls for teachers to take up arms.
"If you have a master of firearms, he can end the attack very quickly," he said.
The president acknowledged that the plan was controversial. "They will go to special training ... there will be no weapons-free zone," he said.
"The presence of an area without weapons encourages nerds and cowards to attack citizens," he said.
Trump denied during his presidential campaign in 2016 support for allowing the presence of weapons in schools.
Hundreds of teenagers from Washington's suburbs gathered outside the White House ahead of the Trump meeting.
At the same time, survivors of the shooting incident called Florida lawmakers to work to impose restrictions on the sale of offensive weapons.
The students chanted "Protect our children" and carried banners reading "Never Again".
This is the first organized protest of the youth-led anti-weapon movement.
Some lawmakers in the state legislature said they would consider raising the minimum age for the purchase of assault rifles, such as those used in last week's massacre, to be 21 instead of 18.
But they rejected a call to ban the sale of such weapons.
Students gathered throughout the United States, including Chicago, Illinois, Pittsburgh, as well as in Pennsylvania, Phoenix and Arizona for solidarity with the Florida protests.
