    Australia's governor-general Peter Cosgrove has revealed that his country's troops will remain in Iraq as long as they are needed, pointing out that Australia has helped Iraq in its fight against terrorism. 

    "Australia will remain as long as it is needed and required," press and media sources quoted Kosgrove as saying on the sidelines of a surprise visit to Iraq. "No one expected Australia to be in the Middle East for a long time." 

    "Australia has helped Iraq to move from being war-torn and totally destroyed to where it was today," he said. "Australia is committed to Iraq in the future. 

    About 300 Australian troops remain in Iraq as part of the Taji Task Force on Joint Forces in Iraq to counter terrorism under US command.
