Asia's largest imports of Iranian crude rose 3.3 percent year-on-year in January to a three-month high as a large rise in purchases by China, the largest buyer, eroded the fall in imports by three other countries, data from ships and government figures showed.

China, India, Japan and South Korea last month imported 1.70 million barrels per day from Iran, the largest volume of imports since October, data showed. This is slightly higher than the 2017 average of 1.67 million bpd.

China's imports of Iranian crude in January jumped 85.9 percent from a year earlier to 748,715 barrels a day, the highest level since September, after an annual decline of three consecutive months. The country's total imports of crude rose about a fifth in January.

India's imports from Iran fell 10.7 percent to 495,000 bpd in January, according to data.

Iran has offered to increase the shipping discount on its oil sales to India in exchange for New Delhi's approval to increase its imports as Tehran is keen to deduct part of the market share of other producers such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

Iranian oil minister Begin Zankane said in mid-February that Indian state and private refiners would buy about 500,000 barrels per day of Iranian oil in 2018-2019.

Japan's imports fell 2.9 percent year-on-year to 203,000 and 259 barrels a day, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's monthly data showed on Wednesday.
