MOSCOW - Russia has offered more than 100 scholarships to Iraqi students and has indicated that it is willing to increase the number of seats to 300 seats next year, the Education Ministry said.

The ministry said in a press statement that "the Minister of Higher Education Abdul Razzaq al-Issa discussed with the Russian Ambassador in Baghdad Maxim Maximov development of scientific cooperation and increase the ceiling of fellowships granted to Iraq."

"The Russian side offered more than 100 fellowships to Iraqi students and their readiness to increase the number of seats to 300 seats next year," he said during the statement. "A meeting is expected for the concerned departments to discuss the required disciplines."

For his part, the Russian ambassador stressed "his country's keenness to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in all fields, especially those related to higher education."

The Ministry of Higher Education agreed earlier with Russia to increase the number of grants and scholarships awarded by the government and Russian universities to Iraqi students to 450 grants annually.
