The US Navy announced Thursday that an F-18 crashed off the coast of Florida and killed its crew.
Two pilots were killed when a F / A-18F Super Hornet crashed during a training mission off the coast of Key West, Florida, the statement said.
The pilot and his assistant pulled out of the water and announced their deaths after the plane crashed while landing at the Navy's Key West Air Force, the Navy said in a statement. The incident was being investigated, she said.
US media earlier quoted a spokesman for the Air Force that the search and rescue operations are underway after the crash off Key West, Florida.
Local media reported, quoting eyewitnesses, that the fire caught the plane before it collided with water.
The plane landed during a training mission near Naval Air Station in Key West, a military facility with air-to-air fighter jets. One witness told local 10 news that the fire had flooded the plane before it crashed about a mile from the runway.
The two pilots managed to fly by parachute outside the plane, said a spokesman for the Nyala Air Station K station before they left.
