The head of the parliamentary affairs committee, Soran Ismail, said on Sunday that the next government can set new dates for holding local elections or to keep the same dates as the current government.

Ismail said that "the parliament voted on the law of provincial elections in general after the agreement on the articles on the province of Kirkuk, and approved the Council of Ministers to hold local elections on December 22 next."

Stressing that, "the Kirkuk elections will be similar to other provinces, after checking the register of voters by the Electoral Commission, which will use data from the Ministries of Interior, Planning and Trade."

"The provincial councils law grants the government the right to vote on the proposal to hold local government elections with a proposal submitted by the Electoral Commission, and the new government can set new dates for provincial elections or keep the same deadlines set by the current government."

The House of Representatives voted early this month on the draft law on provincial and district elections, after the agreement on Articles 37- 52 on Kirkuk, while the Council of Ministers approved the proposal of the Commission to set the date of local elections on 22 December.
