    US Defense Secretary James Matisse on Tuesday warned of a new confrontation between Russia and the US-led coalition forces in Syria.
    Matisse told a number of reporters at the Pentagon that Syrian forces deployed last week east of the Euphrates, which is a zone to reduce tension in accordance with Russia, but approached "to a large extent" the positions of US soldiers.
    The US Defense Secretary said that after consultations between the US chief of staff General Joe Dunford and his Russian counterpart General Valery Girasimov: "These elements have withdrawn and we have also made a limited retreat."
    "This time it was resolved over the telephone line to reduce tension between the United States and Russia," he said.
    Matisse did not specify the date of the incident, but the US military chiefs issued an unclear statement on Thursday, referring to a telephone conversation between the generals on the situation in Syria and other issues of common interest.
