US Ambassador to Iraq Douglas Seelman said Thursday that Iraq produced
15,000 megawatts of electricity last year.
The ambassador said in a speech to the Fourth Iraq Energy Forum followed by "Economy News", "Iraq needs to make rapid changes in the field of energy and oil in particular because of its importance in the economy and needs new investments to operate the largest number of labor because of its importance in reconstruction "He said.
"Iraq has to choose between increasing oil and gas production or relying on other resources and its progress depends clearly on the private sector through the actual signing of lucrative investment contracts, especially that there are a lot of projects and Iraq will not move quickly to launch international financing."
"There are some international companies that have concluded contracts and are starting to get tired of bureaucratic procedures," he said.
"Foreign and Iraqi companies are ready to engage with the government in business and benefit sharing and the government has to offer higher returns than contractual participation. It needs more and more jobs," he said.
"There are 4 companies ready to rebuild the infrastructure and it is time for the government to complete contracts to attract investors."
"Last summer Iraq produced 15,000 megawatts and we support Iraq's efforts to put the electricity track on the right track by increasing revenues through levy and benefiting from the private sector," Sileman said.
He noted that "the energy sector is vital for Iraq and the leaders of Iraq to bring investors in the hydrocarbon industries and our country and its companies is ready to stand with the Iraqi government in the reform and construction of a prosperous Iraq."
