[ltr]MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia conducted a live-ammunition missile exercise in the Baltic Sea on Wednesday, raising concern for Latvia, a NATO member who says maneuvers have forced it to partially close its commercial airspace over the Baltic Sea.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday that its fleet in the Baltic Sea, based in its European region Kaliningrad, is preparing for regular maneuvers in the Baltic Sea, including training with live ammunition to hit land and sea targets.[/ltr]
[ltr]"It is a show of force," said Latvian Prime Minister Maris Kosineskis. "It is difficult to understand that this could happen very soon from our country."[/ltr]
[ltr]Officials said the tests were being conducted in the Special Economic Zone of Latvia, a maritime zone just outside the Latvian territorial waters, where Latvia has special economic rights, as well as further west in the Baltic Sea.[/ltr]
[ltr]Latvia closed part of its airspace during the three days of the tests, and Sweden issued a warning for civilian traffic, saying the maneuvers could delay and disrupt civilian air traffic.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Swedish Transport Agency identified what it called the temporary zone (D) or the danger zone to the south of the Baltic Sea and reorganized the sea and air traffic.[/ltr]
[ltr]The missile tests and military exercises come in the wake of massive military exercises conducted by Russia last September, stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.[/ltr]
[ltr]The maneuvers raised concerns about the size and scope of the West, and NATO said it lacked transparency[/ltr]
