The United States on Wednesday welcomed European countries' efforts to impose new sanctions on Iran, saying they were important to counter Iran's "malicious activity" while companies warned against establishing trade ties with Tehran.
"Sanctions are an important part of the overall effort to counter the malicious activity of Iran in the region," US Treasury Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Sigal Mandelker said, calling for "US support for European steps in this regard."
"Iran is using the funds it derives from the easing of sanctions under the nuclear agreement to support Hezbollah and the Assad regime," she said, warning that "those who try to deal with Iran despite the sanctions risk indirectly funding these activities in the Middle East."
Mandelker pointed out that "Iran did not comply with the terms of the nuclear agreement, citing several factors, the lack of transparency in the Iranian banking system."
