Algeria's Sonatrach announced on Friday that the state-owned company's chief executive was considering the possibility of the state energy company participating in the development of Iraq's Nasiriyah oil field with officials of the Iraqi oil ministry.
Sonatrach said in a statement read by "Economy News" that the company's chief executive Abdulmuen Ould Qaddour and Diaa Kamar Safar, director of the Technical Department of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, also discussed the possibility of Algeria's participation in projects aimed at linking the Iraqi cities to the gas network in the country.
The statement said talks between the two sides focused on the possibility of Sonatrach's participation in developing the Nasiriyah oilfield.
He added that the two sides also studied the opportunity of Sonlegaz, a gas and electricity utility and Naftal, a specialist in the distribution of petroleum products, to expand the gas network to supply Iraqi cities with natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas.
He added that Ould Kaddour and Safar signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen the partnership through the participation of Algerian expertise in the exploration and transport through pipelines.
The Algerian Minister of Energy, Mustafa Qaitouni, visited Iraq on 8 January last, and the two countries signed during the visit a meeting of cooperation in the field of gas industry and exploration between the Ministry of Oil represented by national oil companies and the Algerian Ministry of Energy represented by Sonatrach, and the formation of a joint coordination committee to communicate and follow up on It was agreed upon.
The agreement included "joint work in the optimal investment of gas associated with the production processes in the oil fields and increase its uses to supply the national electrical power system and the petrochemical and fertilizer plants, as well as agreement on the development of mechanisms of utilization and investment optimal gas networks for the processing of citizens and other consumer sectors," according to the Iraqi Oil Ministry.
