[ltr]Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has become the first foreign leader to meet new Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel since becoming president of the communist island last week, highlighting the importance of the alliance between the two countries.[/ltr]
[ltr]Diaz-Canel, 58, was sworn in on Thursday to succeed Raul Castro, 86.[/ltr]
[ltr]Maduro arrived in Havana to congratulate the new president and draw up a map of cooperation between the two countries associated with a strategic alliance since 2000 with the arrival of the late Socialist leader Hugo Chavez to power in Venezuela.[/ltr]
[ltr]"We come to renew hope and renew dreams," Maduro told the Cuban media before meeting with Diaz-Canel at the Revolution Palace. "Above all, to imagine the next 10 years."[/ltr]
[ltr]Venezuela, which has the world's largest oil reserves, shares oil with Cuba for medical and technical services, although supplies have declined over the past few years, damaging the Cuban economy, which is already suffering.[/ltr]
