[ltr]French Parliament approves controversial immigration and asylum bill Erqwetqrgt[/ltr]
    [ltr]Follow up of Mawazine News[/ltr]
[ltr]The French National Assembly (parliament) overwhelmingly approved a bill that would tighten asylum rules after heated discussions that caused the first cracks within President Emmanuel Macaron's party.[/ltr]
[ltr]Jean-Michel Clement, a member of the Macaron party, voted against the bill and said it would break the majority.[/ltr]
[ltr]"I am not sure that we are sending to the citizens of the world the global message that has always been our message," he said in a statement after the vote.[/ltr]
[ltr]228 members of the National Assembly voted in favor of the bill, 139 opposed it and 24 abstained.[/ltr]
[ltr]In June, discussions will be held in the Senate. The last word on the bill remains for parliament.[/ltr]
[ltr]Marin Le Pen, leader of the far right and her colleagues from the National Front in the French parliament, voted in favor of some provisions of the bill, which embarrassed the government.[/ltr]
[ltr]Human rights groups and left-wing parties criticized the bill, which is a test of the unity of the center-left Macaron party.[/ltr]
