NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States is "deeply concerned" about Iran's ambition to dominate the Middle East, New Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday.
"We remain deeply concerned by the serious escalation of Iranian threats to Israel and the region," Pompeo said in remarks he made after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Just two days after he was installed, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Saturday for the first three-day Middle East tour. The United States is seeking a "Pompeo" Jordan and Israel, to rally support for new sanctions against Iran.
"We urge the nations of the world to punish any individuals or entities linked to Iran's missile program," said Brian Hawk, a senior political advisor who accompanies Pompeo to reporters in Riyadh.
Pompio's trip to the Middle East comes as US President Donald Trump prepares to decide on a withdrawal from the nuclear deal signed with Iran in 2015 that is still supported by European powers.
Trump described the nuclear deal as "the worst agreement ever" and threatened to re-impose sanctions on Iran unless European allies agreed Britain, France and Germany to amend the deal.
Russia, China, Germany, Britain and France, which have signed the deal with Iran and the United States, see it as "the best way" to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb.
It is noteworthy that the West agreement with Iran reached in 2015 restricts its nuclear program only, and does not include the agreement Iran's missile program.
