President Donald Trump has told his French counterpart Emmanuel Macaron that he will withdraw from the nuclear deal with Iran, the New York Times reported Tuesday.
The New York Times said that Washington is preparing to re-impose all sanctions on Iran, which were lifted under the nuclear agreement.
While the French presidency denied that Trump had given any indication on the resolution on the agreement of Iran during his contact with Macron.
On Tuesday, the two presidents held telephone consultations "on issues related to peace and stability in the Middle East," the French presidency said.
The telephone calls came a few hours before Trump announced his decision on a nuclear deal with Iran.
Fifteen months after taking office, Trump appears to be ready to challenge a large part of the international community by questioning the agreement, reached in 2015, after 21 months of difficult negotiations.
With the exception of an unexpected coup, the US president will, at least in part, reinstate the sanctions lifted in return for Iran's commitment not to manufacture nuclear weapons.
A European diplomat in Washington summed up the situation on Monday, saying: "It seems quite clear" that Trump would reinstate sanctions.
McCron suggested during his visit to the United States on April 24 to negotiate a "new agreement" with Iran to defuse US concerns, but at the end of his visit did not hide his pessimism, saying Trump might withdraw from the agreement "for internal political reasons."[/ltr]
