US Ambassador to Berlin Richard Grenell called on German companies to stop their activities in Iran following President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal signed with Tehran.

"US sanctions target key sectors of the Iranian economy, and German companies that deal with Iran should immediately reduce their level of operations until a total halt," Greenell said in a twitter comment.

Earlier Tuesday, the Federation of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry warned that European companies would face sanctions in the United States if they put their Iranian partners on US sanctions lists.

This comes despite the announcement of Germany, France and Britain adherence to the nuclear agreement signed with Iran.

Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the nuclear agreement with Iran, stressing that his country would never accept "nuclear extortion".

Trump said he would reinstate US sanctions on Iran, calling for a global commitment to impose sanctions. "We will re-impose the highest level of sanctions on Iran and any country that helps them will be sanctioned," he said.
