China launched its first non-government rocket on Thursday from a launch pad in the northwest, the latest step in its ambitious space program.
The launch of the Shitong-Qing Liang-Jinang Star missile, developed by Beijing-based private space technology company Wan Space Technology, was the first missile successfully launched by a Chinese non-governmental company, the official Xinhua news agency said.
The rocket uses energy-saving technology such as low-voltage wireless communications, reducing the cost of fuel by about 30 percent, the agency said.
One Space Corporation was founded in 2015 as a result of a government effort to promote commercial space flights and encourage private companies to operate in the sector.
Last week, company founder Xu Chang said his company expects to do 10 missile missions in 2019. "I hope to become one of the world's largest satellite launchers," he said.
Among the priorities of President Xi Jinping since taking office in 2012, China has become a "superpower of space" and his government aims to send a permanent manned space station into space by about 2022.
