Washington: We will announce our new strategy to confront Iran on Monday

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will announce a new strategy for dealing with Iran in his first official address since he took office, a State Department official said Monday.
"Pompeo will try to create a framework that will address all of Iran's threats," State Department Policy Planning Director Brian Hawke told a news conference.
The official declined to give details of the planned speech, but said he would aim at revisions to the nuclear deal that address concerns about Iranian ballistic missiles, "fuel Iran civil wars in the region, especially Syria and Yemen, and improve the inspection system."
"The United States is conducting very intensive and in-depth consultations with its European counterparts on the review of the agreement," the official said, noting that "the extent of differences between the United States and Europe on these issues was exaggerated."
"Our efforts are aimed at exerting all the necessary pressure on Iran to change its behavior and to seek a new framework that can dispel our fears," Hawk said, adding that "the foreign minister has engaged in extensive contacts and discussions with his counterparts from Germany, France and Britain on the nuclear agreement."
That "there is a new opportunity to confront the Iranian threats in a new framework," stressing that "the speech of the US Secretary of State will clarify the vision of the United States on how to counter Iran's nuclear program and its military dimensions, and that Iran should abandon those military dimensions of the program."
The US State Department's director of political planning hinted that the re-imposition of sanctions on Iran following the US withdrawal from the deal was an economic pressure component, which brought Iran to the negotiating table in the first place.
"We want a diplomatic way out of the national security interests, and we believe that this agreement has given much to Iran in return for very little, and we will focus in the next phase on achieving President Trump's goals and imposing all necessary pressure on Iran to achieve national security goals," Bryan said.
