[ltr]China has protested the presence of two US warships in the South China Sea after an incident occurred in the disputed maritime zone between a number of countries.[/ltr]
[ltr]Two Chinese ships, the Higgins and the Antitam, were approaching the Chinese-controlled Archipelago of Paracels, which is also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang in a statement broadcast on Sunday evening.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Chinese navy ordered the ships to leave and expel them, the official Xinhua news agency reported.[/ltr]
[ltr]The US Navy regularly carries out maneuvers in the region as part of its "free shipping" operation in the South China Sea, which it has launched since early 2016.[/ltr]
[ltr]Around one-third of world trade accounts for this strategic sea crossing, in which Beijing has built military installations on artificial islands in support of its demands for sovereignty.[/ltr]
[ltr]Beijing claims almost full sovereignty over the South China Sea, despite a decision by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in 2016 that China has no "historical rights" to justify its claims of sovereignty.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan are demanding sovereignty over parts of the maritime zone.[/ltr]
[ltr]"China strongly calls on the United States to immediately stop this kind of provocation that violates China's sovereignty and threatens its security," Lu said.[/ltr]
[ltr]The incident occurred after the Chinese army on May 18 launched a launcher from a Paracels island, sparking protests from the United States, the Philippines and Vietnam.[/ltr]
[ltr]In early May, Beijing deployed missiles in the Spratles archipelago to the south of Paracels, according to the CNBC network quoting sources close to the intelligence services.[/ltr]

China's defense ministry denounced what it said was a "violation of the sovereignty of the country" by US ships sailed near disputed islands in the South China Sea as part of military exercises in the region.
"The US action seriously violated Chinese sovereignty, because the warships entered China's territorial waters without permission," the defense said in a brief statement on Sunday. Finished[/ltr]
