The euro hit a six-and-a-half-month low on Tuesday, down for a third straight day as Italian bond markets are selling as political fears mount, prompting investors to abandon the single currency.
The Italian president put the country on track for early elections on Monday, appointing a former IMF official as interim prime minister with his mandate to plan early elections and approve the next budget.
Financial markets are concerned about the elections, which may take place in August and may be more like a referendum on Italy's role in the European Union and the euro area and may strengthen the position of the parties skeptical of the euro more.
