US Trade Secretary: Tariffs should not prevent us from negotiating

    2018/05/30 19:40

(Encyclopedia of this Day News | Iraq News ) - Live: US Secretary of Commerce rejected the demands of the European Union on access to full exemption from tariffs on steel and aluminum.

"China has been subject to customs duties since March, while trade negotiations with Beijing are continuing," Wilber Ross said on the sidelines of his forum at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) forum in Paris on Wednesday.

China has not used this as a pretext for not negotiating, he said, noting that the only European Union that insists it can not negotiate if tariffs are imposed.

Steel and aluminum tariffs are due to go into effect this week for countries that have been granted a temporary exemption before a final round of negotiations with the EU.

The comments come in response to criticism by the European Union of delaying the imposition of tariffs the White House announced to its trading partners around the world in March.

The US minister said that there are negotiations with or without tariffs.

US President Donald Trump decided last March to set tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum by 25 percent and 10 percent respectively, with the postponement of the application with US trade allies such as Canada, Mexico and the European Union until the end of May until negotiations.

The leaders of those countries are awaiting a decision from the Trump administration on the imposition of customs duties or extension of the postponement decision for the third time until the end of negotiations or the abolition of tariffs.
