The United States has announced it will impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports by 25 percent and 10 percent respectively from Mexico, Canada and the European Union from Thursday.
The Mexican Economy Ministry said in a statement today: "Given the tariffs imposed by the United States, Mexico will put similar measures on a range of products, including steel.
The definitions will also include pork, sausages and other food preparations, apples, grapes, wild grapes, various cheeses and others.
As part of the massive supply chains for cars, space and electronics that cross the US-Mexico border, the country is the largest aluminum buyer and the second-largest steel buyer from Washington,
Mexico is also a major importer of food from the United States.
Mexico reiterates its willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with the United States, its support for international trade and its rejection of unilateral protectionist measures.
By 5:45 pm GMT, the Mexican peso fell 1.3 percent to 19.9811 pesos against the US dollar.
