[ltr]Jordan's King Abdullah is expected to ask Prime Minister Hani al-Mulqi to resign in an effort to calm public anger over economic policies that have triggered the biggest protests in years, political sources said.[/ltr]
[ltr]The sources said that King Abdullah II summoned Prime Minister Hani al-Mulqi to appear in front of him Monday morning at the Husseiniya Palace in Amman.[/ltr]
[ltr]The taxpayer lifted taxes sharply with a mandate from the International Monetary Fund this year to reduce rising public debt. The increases have affected the incomes of Jordanian citizens, which in turn has affected the popularity of Al-Mulqi.[/ltr]
[ltr]There were reports that the meeting could end with the dismissal of the government or withdrawal of the draft tax law.[/ltr]
[ltr]The development comes as demonstrations continue across the kingdom in protest against the draft wage tax law and economic policies.[/ltr]
[ltr]Hundreds of citizens gathered Sunday evening in the vicinity of the prime minister, demanding the resignation of the government.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Jordanian Senate held a session on Sunday to discuss amendments to the income tax law that sparked a wave of popular protests across the kingdom.[/ltr]
[ltr]The President of the Council, Faisal Al Fayez, stressed the need to open a comprehensive national dialogue on the law to achieve a balance between the challenges and economic pressures and the interests of the various segments of society, the official Petra news agency reported.[/ltr]
[ltr]Protests were renewed in the Jordanian capital after Prime Minister Hani al-Mulqi rejected a meeting with presidents of labor unions and deputies to withdraw the bill, while trade unions called for a one-day strike this week.[/ltr]
[ltr]Protesters demanded al-Mulqi's removal during a series of protests over tax increases backed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and caused unrest in the kingdom.[/ltr]
