Lack of sleep leads to injury to adolescents with heart disease

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Sleep disorders in adolescents affect cardiovascular health, a new study shows.
The study was conducted by researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States, and published their findings, in the latest issue of the journal Pediatrics.
To explore the relationship between sleep quality and heart health, the team conducted a long-term study of more than 2,000 women and their registered children between 1999 and 2002.
The results showed that the average length of sleep in all adolescents was 441 minutes or 7.35 hours per day, while only 2.2% of the participants exceeded the average number of sleep hours per day in the age group.
According to the study, the average number of recommended sleep hours is 9 hours per day for ages 11-13 and 8 hours per day for adolescents aged 14-17 years.
The team found that 31% of participants slept less than 7 hours per day and more than 58% did not enjoy high sleep quality.
Short sleep duration and low sleep efficiency were associated with increased levels of fat deposition in the kidney and abdomen, affecting cardiovascular health such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
"The amount and quality of sleep is one of the pillars of health, along with diet and physical activity," said Dr. Elizabeth Feliciano, the research team leader.
"Pediatricians should realize that poor sleep quality and frequent waking up at night are associated with an increased risk of heart disease," she said.
A previous study warned that children who get fewer hours of sleep than those recommended for their age are more likely to develop obesity in adulthood.
