    Voters in Turkey began voting on Sunday in presidential and parliamentary elections, the biggest challenge to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) since he came to power more than a decade and a half ago.

    The election will also mark the start of a new regime for a strong executive presidency, long sought by Erdogan and backed by a small minority of Turks in a referendum in 2017. Opponents say it would further undermine democracy in NATO member Turkey and consolidate the rule of the individual.

    The number of eligible voters is more than 56 million. The voting began at 8 am and ends at 5 pm

    Early presidential and parliamentary elections begin in Turkey


    On Sunday, Turkey is to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on a unified day of elections in which six presidential candidates and eight parties will compete for parliamentary seats.
    The elections were scheduled for November 2019. But President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for elections to be held on June 24 because of what he called the need for economic and regional crises.
    In the presidential elections, incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Muharram Enjeh (Republican People's Party), Miral Akshinir (Al-Khair Party), Salahuddin Demirtash (Democratic Peoples Party) , In addition to Dogu Perinik, the "home party".
    In order for the presidential candidate to reach power, he will receive 50% of the votes. If the candidates can not achieve this result, the two most votes will qualify for a second round on 8 July.
