    The bazaar traders in Tehran have staged a rare step in protest against the continuing deterioration in the value of the national currency. The Iranian capital has witnessed clashes between security forces and demonstrators who are resentful of the deteriorating economic conditions.
    The decline in the value of the Iranian riyal has accelerated against the backdrop of economic concerns since the United States announced in May its withdrawal from the nuclear deal signed with Iran, which paves the way for tougher US economic sanctions against Iran.
    The riyal lost about 50% of its value in six months and the dollar exchange rate reached 85,000 riyals in the parallel market.
    "The demands of the market traders are legitimate, they want to clarify the situation of the exchange market in a final way," the head of the central council of the bazaar Abdullah Esfandiari told Esna.
    "We hope to pay attention to their problems and the market (Tuesday) will return to normal movement."
    Traders are "protesting against the high exchange rate, the volatility of foreign currencies ... the obstruction of goods in customs, the lack of clear criteria for customs clearance and the fact that under these conditions they are unable to make decisions or sell their goods," he said.
    Shops in the streets of the bazaar did not open.
    "It's the first time in my life that I see it," said a 45-year-old carpet trader. "Everything is intertwined and the national currency is deteriorating, affecting all sectors of the economy."
    "The shops have been closed since morning," another carpet dealer said. "Riot police intervened in the morning" against a trade demonstration. "Two men were arrested and calm returned."
    Amid dissatisfaction with the economic situation, limited confrontations broke out Monday afternoon among dozens of youths and security forces in the center of the capital. In parallel, video clips on social networking sites appeared to appear to be another clash between protesters and police in Tehran.
    At 3:30 p.m. (1100 GMT), riot police used tear gas at the Firdousi junction and the Islamic Republic in central Tehran against dozens of youths throwing stones and projectiles at police.
    The protesters, who chanted "Support us, Iranians", dispersed after being repulsed by the police.

    "The people should know that even in the most embarrassing circumstances, they will have enough foreign currency at the official exchange rate to buy basic and essential goods," the official IRNA news agency quoted First Vice President Yitzhak Jahangiri as saying.
    Iran's central bank governor, Aliullah Saif, announced on Iranian state television the creation of a "parallel" foreign exchange market for importers.
    On April 15, the Iranian central bank banned exchange offices from dealing in foreign currencies "until further notice", and restricted the implementation of the sale of foreign currency and bought by banks.
    "The information on social media should be handled with great caution," a diplomatic source said, but noted that there were "severe demonstrations in Tehran during the day."
