    China has been conducting daily naval combat exercises for more than a week in waters close to Taiwan amid escalating tensions between Beijing and the autonomous island, according to Chinese media.
    "A group of warships have been practicing since June 17 near Taiwan, including the Baashi Channel and the Taiwan Strait," the Chinese army's official newspaper 818. reported.
    "The exercises test the army's training capabilities for crews of warships, aviation and defense on the coasts by organizing real combat training in several areas of the ocean."
    "The ships are under constant surveillance, and there is no reason to worry," the defense ministry said in a statement.
    US Defense Secretary James Matisse is on an official visit to China, where he will meet with a number of officials.
    China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and does not rule out the use of force to give it control. End 25 n
