WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington warned on Tuesday that Turkey would buy Russian S-400 air defense missile systems, saying it would lead to unilateral sanctions on Ankara, as well as a qualitative change in bilateral relations.
US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, Wes Mitchell, said: "We have clearly spoken during many contacts with the highest officials of the Turkish government that there will be consequences, primarily in terms of what is written in Section 231 of the CAATSA Through sanctions .. We will do so, and when we understand that the deal has been made, we will impose sanctions according to CAATSA. "
This came in response to Ankara's intention to purchase the S-400 systems during a hearing at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Congress.
Representatives of Russia and Turkey signed a loan agreement for the purchase of the S-400 in December 2017. The two sides also agreed to cooperate in developing the production of systems in Turkey.
Turkey has been criticized repeatedly by US officials, and NATO, "NATO", because of this deal.
For his part, the Turkish Foreign Minister Mouloud Javishoglu, then, that his country will respond if the United States stopped arms sales, especially the F-35.
