    "Two US naval vessels made a routine passage in the international waters of the Taiwan Strait on July 7 and 8," Captain Charlie Brown, spokesman for the US Pacific Fleet, told Reuters in a statement.

    "US naval vessels pass between the South China Sea and the East China Sea across the Taiwan Strait and have done so for many years," Brown said.

    US officials, who asked not to be named, said the destroyers, Maustin and Penfold, had crossed the Taiwan Straits.

    Earlier in the day, the Taiwan Defense Ministry said the ships were moving north-east, adding that the situation was consistent with the rules.

    Washington has no formal ties with Taiwan but is legally bound to help defend itself, the island's main source of weapons. 

    China has always said that Taiwan is the most sensitive issue in its relations with the United States.

    Transit in the Taiwan Strait is the first of a US naval ship in nearly a year and comes after a series of Chinese military exercises around the island, sparking tensions between Taipei and Beijing.

    "The United States is increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait," the Times-run Global Times said on Twitter.
