The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Monday expressed concern about the ongoing events in Basra after security forces shot at protesters.

"We are concerned that the Iraqi security forces opened fire on demonstrators north of the city of Basra, killing one person and wounding a number of others," the organization said in a statement.

"Amnesty welcomes the announcement of the Iraqi authorities to open an investigation and ask them to maintain its independence and accuracy."

"Activists told Amnesty International that the demonstration was peaceful and free of weapons, and those responsible for the violence should be held accountable in the demonstration," she said.

The UN stressed that "the right of Iraqis to exercise their right to peaceful assembly without intimidation or repression."
