WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic lawmakers called on Congress to summon US President Donald Trump's interpreter to listen to it amid growing controversy over the Helsinki summit between Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin .

The two presidents held talks behind closed doors for two hours without any other official except their translators. Democrats say the women translated into Trump and the remarks she believes she made during the meeting may provide important information about what has been nominated.

We want to see the written notes, "Sen. Bob Minides, a Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a television interview.
"We will have to make tremendous efforts to try and find out what happened."

Lawmakers from both Democratic and Republican parties expressed concern and even anger at Trump's attitude toward Putin at a joint press conference on Monday.

Senators Richard Blumenthal and Jane Shaheen have also asked to listen to the translator.

Shahin said listening to her could help MPs and the American people "identify what was specifically discussed and agreed on behalf of the United States."

Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee Senator Bob Korker said he understood the request and was "looking for a similar precedent" to see whether the request was viable.

The White House is very likely to ignore the demand, especially since its executive privileges allow it not to disclose private talks, and an assistant like the translator should not be forced to do so either.
"They are not political men, in some cases they are contract employees," Korker told reporters.

He added that the best option would be to listen to Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo, who accompanied Trump to Helsinki, and is likely to be briefed by the President on the summit discussions.
The commission is due to listen to Pompeo on July 25.
