The alliance of "victory" headed by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi hinted to his transition to the opposition in case Abadi did not get a second term headed by the government.

"The conditions of political reform launched by the Sadrist leader Moqtada al-Sadr on the next government and its president apply to Haider al-Abadi," Alliance member Riad al-Tamimi said in a press statement, stressing that his alliance would go to the opposition if Abadi did not become prime minister.

He added: "All members of the victory coalition adhering to Abadi as a candidate for prime minister, provided that he waives his second nationality, otherwise the members will be against him."
