In the first official Chinese response to the Syrian newspaper "Al Watan" that Beijing is ready to participate in the liberation of Idlib, the Chinese Embassy in Damascus pointed out that these reports are baseless.
Al-Watan newspaper published a clarification on Tuesday, which included the Embassy's statement in this regard, which attributed the appearance of the news to "the misinterpretation of the ambassador's words and the military attaché." He stressed that China stands with the peaceful solution of the Syrian crisis, The Syrian army is involved in any military operation.
Earlier, a member of the Syrian negotiating committee, Hadi al-Bahra, wrote in a tweet that the agency had received confirmation from the Chinese Embassy in Riyadh that the news was incorrect and that the Chinese side had requested an apology from Al-Watan for publication.
Yesterday, the Foreign Relations Office of the Negotiating Body visited the Chinese Embassy in Riyadh to confirm the information written by Al-Watan newspaper based in Damascus about China's willingness to participate in the Battle of Idlib.
The Chinese ambassador confirmed that the information was incorrect and that they asked for an apology from the newspaper.
The length of the suspension from China, which did not make its position until about a week after the news spread, prompted some observers to talk about the possibility of a "qualitative leap" in China's international strategy after having adopted for decades the principle of not sending the armed forces abroad.
Observers pointed out that the interests of China in the north of Syria is centered on the desire to eliminate its citizens involved in the Islamic Party of Turkmenistan, who are fighting under the banner of the "Sham Liberation Organization" (former victory) and have very high combat capabilities, to prevent their return to the Central Asia, Or even the predominantly Ukrainian Uygur Autonomous Region of Qingtang.
Although most observers do not expect China's direct military involvement in the potential battle of Idleb, they note that the Chinese may be pressing for at least a limited operation, focusing on the city of Jisr al-Shughur, west of Idlib, the stronghold of the Islamic Party of Turkestan in the region.
It is not ruled out that Beijing supports such a process financially and materially, recalling that Damascus has received from China loans and shipments of military materials of clothing, equipment, transportation, in addition to some types of light weapons, since the outbreak of conflict in the country in 2011.
