In his positive remarks, US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would "meet" North Korean leader Kim Jong-un again, while defending his efforts to persuade Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear weapons.
In an interview with Reuters, Trump, who held a historic summit with Kim on June 12, said he believed North Korea had taken specific steps towards nuclear disarmament, despite widespread skepticism about Kim's willingness to give up his arsenal.
Trump insisted that "a lot of good things" were happening with North Korea, but noted that China was not doing as much as it had done in the past because of its trade dispute with the United States.
Trump said he had been handling North Korea's file for only three months, while his predecessors had dealt with him for 30 years.
Trump pointed out that there was "wonderful chemistry" between him and Kim, which had the merit of calming the nuclear dispute.
Asked if a second meeting with Kim was on the horizon, Trump said, "We'll probably meet but I do not want to comment."
Critics believe Trump made many concessions to Kim by agreeing to hold the summit in the first place, and then suspending the joint US-South Korean military exercises, while Pyongyang did little in return.
