The French oil and gas giant Total, on Monday, officially informed the Iranian authorities to withdraw from the South Pars gas project, which amounts to investments of billions of dollars, after not received exemption from US sanctions, announced the Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zangneh that Iran's oil and gas facilities are in a state of disrepair and need renovation work, which Iran can not afford.
Zangeneh attended the Iranian parliament today to answer questions about safety concerns following a number of fires that have recently erupted in a number of refineries.
"A large part of the oil industry is crumbling, and the necessary modernization has not happened," the official IRNA news agency quoted him as saying.
He confirmed the registration of 10 cases a day of the exposure of pipe holes in the facilities of southern Iran, and the life of some refineries up to 80 years, at a useful industrial facility 30 years. "We do not have resources to update them," he said.
Zengeneh said the French oil giant Total has officially withdrawn from a multi-billion dollar project in the South Pars field following the re-imposition of US sanctions on Tehran.
"Total has officially withdrawn from the agreement to develop phase 11 of the South Pars field, and more than two months have passed since it announced it would withdraw from the contract."
Woodman Mackenzie, an energy specialist at Wood Mackenzie in London, told Agence France-Presse that it was unlikely Chinese company CNBCI or the Iranian companies would take the project.
Total is not the only company that has put an end to its activities in Iran. Car and rail companies, Deutsche Telekom, Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Telekom and French Air Liquefied Gas United State.
