The administration of US President Donald Trump has rejected Turkey's offer to release Rev. Andrew Brunson in a bid to stop the pursuit of billions of dollars in bribes to the Turkish bank Khalk, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
The newspaper said that Turkey had asked to stop the ongoing investigation at the Bank of creation, which may impose fines on charges of helping Iran to avoid US sanctions.
But the US administration said it would not discuss the issue of fines and other issues of contention between the two sides before the launch of Brunson, the newspaper quoted a senior White House official.
"A real ally in NATO would not have stopped Brunson from the ground," the unnamed official was quoted as saying.
A Turkish court last week rejected a new appeal for the release of the subject, who is under house arrest and is being tried on terrorism-related charges.
US President Donald Trump has doubled tariffs on aluminum and steel tariffs for Turkey. Turkey has responded by increasing tariffs on many US products, and threatened to reciprocate if Washington imposed further sanctions.
The diplomatic confrontation led to the deterioration of the Turkish currency against the dollar.
