Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi today ordered the security forces responsible for the protection of Iraqi institutions and consulates in Basra to be investigated.

"The Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Haider al-Abadi, orders the transfer of the security units responsible for the protection of Iraqi institutions and the consulate of Iran to the investigation for not fulfilling their duties in providing the necessary protection."

Protesters stormed the Iranian consulate on Friday and set fire to the compound's outer perimeter, chanting slogans denouncing Iran.

At least 10 protesters have been killed since Monday in Basra, home to about 2 million people, after local government buildings burned and clashed with security forces. Protesters complain of the collapse of the infrastructure, leaving them without electricity or clean drinking water in the summer heat.

The Iraqi National Security Council, led by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, met on Friday and said it was pursuing an investigation into casualties during the protests.

And intensified the demonstrations in Basra during the past few days, where the province witnessed the burning of the building of the provincial council and the headquarters of political parties, including the headquarters of the Badr Organization and the Dawa Party and Virtue and Asaib Ahl al-Haq.

Basra province has been witnessing for months months angry demonstrations demanding the provision of services, primarily drinking water and electricity, and developed to the intervention of security forces, killing a number of demonstrators and wounding others.
