The Defense Research Agency has announced a $ 2 billion investment to develop a new generation of artificial intelligence with "human-like" communication capabilities.
The agency will use the money to finance about 20 projects now or in the future with the aim of creating a new level of automated learning, said Stephen Walker, director of Advanced Defense Research Projects Agency at a news conference near Washington.
"We are making several research investments aimed at transforming computers from specialized devices into a problem-solving partner," Walker said, referring to the new generation of AI-Next Artificial Intelligence.
"We want to explore how machines gain analysis and communication capabilities like human analysis and communication, with the ability to identify and adapt to new situations and conditions," Walker said in an official statement.
It is difficult to update the current generation of smart machines and robots when new technology emerges.
Walker said researchers wanted to learn those machines and robots to update themselves.
The agency said modern smart machines would allow for faster security audits. Most of the agency's research, funded entirely by the Pentagon, focuses on technology that can be used in combat, such as aircraft that become more independent.
