The United States recalled its ambassadors in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Panama because of their decisions to withdraw their recognition of Taiwan.

Washington has expressed concern over the rise in the number of countries that cut off diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China.

El Salvador switched diplomatic relations from Taiwan to China last month, while the Dominican Republic did so in May, Panama took the same step last year.

Taiwan, which has unilaterally declared independence, has formal relations with only 17 countries, mostly small and developing countries in Central America and the Pacific, including Belize and Nauru.

Like most other countries, Washington has no diplomatic relations with Taiwan's capital, Taipei, but it is the main arms supplier to it and its most powerful international supporter.
